Moderated by Blake Williamson, MD, MPH, the Tech Update session covered the myriad ways in which technology is revolutionizing modern ophthalmic practice. Roger Zaldivar, MD, MBA, discussed the use of virtual patient consultations, citing that 60% of millennials support telehealth. Ranya Habash, MD, shared her predictions for artificial intelligence and machine learning in ophthalmology; Jennifer Loh, MD, detailed the essential technologies she has implemented in her solo practice; and Amr Kouchouk, MD, reviewed the game-changing apps he uses personally and professionally, including Mint, Trello, and Legrande. Ophthalmologist 2.0

Recognizing the ever-evolving roles of ophthalmologists, the Ophthalmologist 2.0 session covered some unique personal and practice-based challenges. Moderator Neda Shamie, MD, was joined by Blake Williamson, MD, MPH, who discussed a catastrophic Louisiana flood that devastated many members of his staff and shared pearls for disaster preparation. Ivan Mac, MD, recounted his personal experience managing a patient with troubling behavior, and Ashley Brissette, MD, described the work-related musculoskeletal disorders associated with performing eye surgery. Last, Dr. Shamie led panelists Sheri Rowen, MD; Cynthia Matossian, MD, FACS; Sahar Bedrood, MD, PhD; and Jenny Yu, MD, in a candid conversation about inequality in medicine, the changing ratio of male to female physicians, and the importance of advocating for oneself.
