Ten US-based organizations have formed a coalition to launch scEYEnce, a campaign designed to educate the public, the media, policymakers, and other key stakeholders about the importance of vision research. Members of the working group include the AAO, Glaucoma Research Foundation, Foundation Fighting Blindness, National Eye Institute, and more. According to scEYEnce, the campaign will use traditional and social media outreach to highlight cutting-edge research and the scientists conducting it, graphics that illustrate the impact of vision loss, and a resource-filled website featuring stories and sources on new insights and investigations.

A recent editorial published in Ophthalmology discusses the opportunity for ophthalmologists to help educate patients on the importance of common vaccines and stem the tide against vaccine hesitancy. “Ophthalmologists can play an important role in promoting public health through vaccinations by leveraging their strong patient relationships, access to vulnerable populations, repeated patient interactions, and positions as trusted members of the medical community,” the study authors wrote.
