Around the World: Arthur B. Cummings, MB ChB, FCS(SA), MMed(Ophth), FRCS(Edin)

Arthur B. Cummings, MB ChB, FCS(SA), MMed(Ophth), FRCS(Edin) Dublin, Ireland

Practice Location:

Wellington Eye Clinic; Dublin, Ireland

Type of practice and patient population:

Mostly cataract and refractive practice, making up 85% to 90% of what I do. We are expanding, however, and building out medical and surgical retina, glaucoma, and pediatrics.

Best part about living in dublin:

It’s a friendly, doable city with everything that you need close by. Great people. Great food. Great buzz (or “craic” as the Irish say*). Dublin is also close to everything geographically. The United States is a 7-hour flight from here, and most cities in Europe are less than 2 hours away.

Favorite way to spend a day off:

What is a day off? :)
There are so many ways: a bit of golf, a bit of shopping with my wife. Dublin is the best-value cultural city in Europe (just recently announced), and there are always concerts, music festivals, shows, theaters, markets, art galleries, museums, and pubs to visit, plus opportunities for sailing, cycling, walking, etc. There is a lot to do in this city!

*Pronounced “crack”—but it’s not the drug! Craic means having a good time with lots of banter, laughter, and goodwill and normally includes a good deal of drinking at one of Dublin’s 1,000 pubs.
