OCULAR PARASITE

My eye hurts just looking at this one. Having recently been in Mexico for the ACES/SEE Caribbean Eye meeting, this video hits a little close to home. It demonstrates an amazing case of an ocular parasite and how it was surgically removed.

DROPLESS CATARACT SURGERY

This video shows the technique of injecting a formulated mixture of triamcinolone, moxifloxacin, and vancomycin (TriMoxiVanc) with a transzonular approach. Our practice is about to undergo a study to evaluate the effectiveness of TriMox (triamcinolone and moxifloxacin), and I am thankful for this great video to help describe the technique we plan on using. With the rising cost and inconvenience of perioperative eye drops, we may all want to become familiar with this medication and/or approach to drug delivery.

PHACO MACHINES

With the advanced fragmentation patterns with femtosecond lasers, phaco ultrasound has become less important; however, there is new emphasis on fluidics to maximize efficiency. The three newest machines available are the Whitestar Signature System (Abbott Medical Optics), the Centurion Vision System (Alcon), and the Stellaris Vision Enhancement System (Bausch + Lomb). The Centurion boasts the newest pump-driven peristaltic fluidics. Bausch + Lomb has pioneered venturi pump systems, and the dual linear capabilities with the “yaw” footpedal found on the Stellaris are quite efficient. The Whitestar Signature is the only device that has the ability to toggle back and forth between peristaltic and venturi pumps.
