Ophthalmologists Unwind

"In my free time, I love traveling with my husband to explore new cultures and spending time with my family."

"My music is my release; using both sides of the brain can only be healthy! Most people know that DJing is my hobby, but I also get paid to professionally do my hobby with LiveNation at the House of Blues Chicago. I look forward to my next gig at the American Academy of Ophthalmology annual meeting in New Orleans, at the House of Blues, on Saturday, November 11. See you there!”

"I enjoy spending time with my family and make that a priority! I walk in the door, and, from that second until they go to sleep, I focus on “my boys,” ie, my husband and twin sons. Only then do I unpack my bag, change out of my scrubs, and sit down! I love traveling, which we try to piggyback on both our busy travel schedules. I go to the gym and do classes to alleviate my stress and do weekly brunch with my husband and kids and friends. The biggest moment I get concerned about burnout is that the value of time I spend away from my family at work is declining. My husband is not in medicine, and his time value at work increases while mine decreases as reimbursement decreases and overhead continues to remain the same. Of course, value is more than money, and I love what I do, so perhaps it will be enough to overcome that in the long run!"

"I love the sea and swimming—I feel they are necessary to my survival. Once, when I was very tired and in the middle of a busy period, I found myself on an elephant safari! It was the best therapy. Additionally, I follow operas very closely. I am excited during each performance and sometimes cry when I watch. My favorite is Puccini’s Tosca, particularly “E lucevan le stelle.” Lastly, walking at Istanbul Bosphorus is an almost-daily activity for me. Here, I can breathe and feel relaxed mentally and physically."

"Bill [William B. Trattler, MD] and I recently got certified in scuba diving!"

"Some of the ways in which I unwind include: cooking, DIY home improvement projects, outdoor activities, traveling, learning about new cultures of the places I travel to, massive Christmas cookie baking, and giving back. I recently became a member of the board of a nonprofit organization that helps victims of human trafficking. The organization is called Freedom and Fashion, and it runs programs for development of fashion-related skills for interested participants who have been victims of human trafficking and are interested in developing these skills either as a strategy for re-insertion into productivity, or as a strategy for emotional outlet through the art of fashion."

"Here, I am unwinding with George IV and George V at our annual Brazilian Junina party and enjoying family beach time. George V is spending time with his buddy William Walter and playing the drums."

"I unwind by doing anything outdoors, especially if it is something new, or hanging with my wife."

"We do have some colleagues that rest and recharge by performing at Chippendales…"

"Traveling is one of my favorite hobbies. It enables me to spend more quality time with the ones I love, to unwind, to visit new countries, and to experience new cultures. It is so relaxing!"
