Going Global

In the publishing world, we are often working far ahead. In preparing for a new year of MillennialEYE, we determined this issue’s cover focus—Going Global—in 2021. Collectively, ophthalmology as a medical specialty has a strong spirit of giving back and volunteerism, and, for many, these efforts extend beyond their own practices, into their communities and sometimes globally. With this issue, we wanted to recognize those who look outward and offer perspectives on the challenges and initiatives that influence the provision of and access to eye care outside the United States. When we determined this topic, however, we had no idea just how international our collective focus would be at this time.

In this issue, individuals who participate in global ophthalmology share information on ethical outreach, the personal and population effects of sight-threatening diseases, opportunities to become involved in training and in practice, and the requirements for affecting meaningful and sustainable change. As contributor Sila Bal, MD, MPH, reiterates in her article, “Global Health: An Approach to Sustainable and Ethical Outreach,” health is a fundamental human right. Ophthalmology as a field is fortunate to have individuals so deeply committed to providing and preserving sight and to considering—and prioritizing—the quality of life of people everywhere.
