Balloon Intumescent Cataracts

Cathleen M. McCabe, MD

A 32-year-old patient with type 1 diabetes presented with a reported 2-week history of decreased visual acuity in both eyes. Slit-lamp examination showed bilateral intumescent cataracts with fluid clefts. A femtosecond laser was used to create the capsulotomy in the first eye, resulting in the Argentinian flag sign. A Zepto device (Centricity Vision) was used in the second eye, and the capsulotomy was completed without extension.
