As discussed in the preceding articles of this issue’s Cover Focus, technological innovations and digital media continue to pervade many areas of ophthalmic practice and medicine in general. Another field that is no stranger to these developments is publishing. As publishers, editors, and readers are all well aware, publications of all types—from daily newspapers to trade publications to high-fashion magazines—are placing an emphasis on web- and app-based content and the boundless opportunities afforded by this format. In turn, this shift in focus has created an environment in which an all-digital publication such as MillennialEYE can thrive. We’ll be honest, working on MillennialEYE is fun. Despite the stressors that go hand in hand with operating in a deadline-driven field, we at MillennialEYE experience many exciting opportunities that are a direct result of our app-based format. Not confined by the typical constraints associated with print, we task our contributors to be as creative as possible, while internally committing ourselves to the same challenge. At MillennialEYE, all article ideas have the opportunity to be transformed into interactive experiences, the sum of which results in a unique and (we hope) enjoyable way to stay informed and involved in the ophthalmic community.
No strangers to The Digital Age, we decided to create a short behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of MillennialEYE as part of the Cover Focus. From the initial kickoff call to the final launch in the App Store, building an issue of MillennialEYE is a creative and rewarding experience for all of us involved.
