Patient Engagement: One Post at a Time

Why a blog on an ophthalmology practice website? More specifically, why a blog that covers anything other than eye care topics? At SkyVision, we’ve always looked for ways to expand the engagement we have with our patients beyond the four walls of the exam room and beyond the time we spend together in the office. The SkyVision blog allows us to do this in a number of ways, all of which we think are fun and unobtrusive for our patients. Add in the ability to alert our patients to a new entry with features such as opt-in emails and Facebook, and you can have an ongoing conversation!

It’s been our experience that patients are surprisingly interested in their doctors and nurses and the other people who help keep them healthy. Our blog lets us give patients a little bit of insight into what makes our SkyVision people tick. Why does Dr. White wear a bow tie, and where does he get all of them? Dr. Kaye is so tall; did he play basketball? That’s not Dr. Schlegel under the helmet on that crazy orange motorcycle, is it? Stuff like that! Our blog gives us a chance to “fill out the character,” if you will, and enables us to expand the short story of a visit into a tiny novel.

Of course, our main reason for blogging on www.SkyVisionCenters.com is to keep our patients up to date on the latest developments in eye care. Little things such as a new test or a promising medication that is in development might get missed as we concentrate so hard on the basic work done during an eye exam, so we use our blog to more completely fulfill our role as medical educators. Hot-button issues, such as that terrible inaccurate news story about fish oil and medical risks, can be covered for everyone in just a few hundred words.

While we’re at it, we might as well have some fun! So, how many days do YOU think I can go without repeating a bow tie?!
