Staying Current

As often discussed in Eyetube Picks and MillennialEYE as a whole, the field of ophthalmology is continuously evolving. On a micro scale, new technologies, techniques, and practice methods continue to be presented, tested, and implemented. On a macro scale, the practice of medicine in general faces potential changes in light of the shifting political landscape. As practitioners, we are tasked with staying current. We must remain dedicated to assessing and, if warranted, updating our day-to-day processes and offerings; we must also ensure that we are educated about the bigger-picture happenings in health care. Doing so guarantees we remain fully engaged in and prepared for the changes we inevitably face—whether they be subtle or seismic.

SURGICAL UPGRADE

This video showcases a modern-day sutured IOL technique. Michael A. Klufas, MD, and Pradeep S. Prasad, MD, utilize trocar vitrectomy technology along with a GoreTex suture, which lasts without fear of breakage. Further, the four-point fixation of the Akreos lens (Bausch + Lomb) allows for a stable optic that will not tilt or decenter. All in all, this approach represents a great advance over the traditional technique of Prolene-sutured PMMA IOLs.

OPHTHALMOLOGY AND POLITICS

Here we have a very timely analysis of the current political climate and 2016 presidential election. Jeff Kimbell, a staple at the annual AECOS Winter Symposium, always does a great job of providing an up-to-date look at the political landscape and projecting how impending changes could potentially affect ophthalmologists.

THRIVING IN MODERN-DAY MEDICINE

At the 2015 Caribbean Eye Meeting, Vance Thompson, MD, delivered the prestigious Sheets Martin Lecture on thriving in modern-day medicine. As presented on Eyetube, Dr. Thompson gives an inspiring speech describing his philosophy and drive, which are exemplified by the successful practice he has built, his impact on his regional patient base, and the legacy he has created in ophthalmology.
