I need to have passion for my profession, so simply making a living would not give me satisfaction. Given my love of mathematics and my enjoyment of working with my hands, I would choose a sub-field of engineering. I’ve always had a deep respect for the work of engineers, and, in many aspects, ophthalmology is optical engineering for the eyes. 

I love this space and innovation, too, so I would support those still practicing via teaching, consulting, and research and development. On the other hand, it’s not too late to try something novel—just ask Wang Deshun. 

If I had to stop practicing medicine today (but still earn a living), I would do several things. I would continue my work in global health with eye bank development and teaching, I would obtain yoga certification as an instructor and teach yoga as well as spin classes, and I would consider another career as an executive coach.
