On the Surface

Over the past decade, the field of dry eye disease (DED) has exploded. As such, our understanding of this multifactorial and complex disease has dramatically evolved, as have our interventions. Today, we have a range of diagnostic devices, point-of-care tests, and medical and interventional treatment options to aid in the management of DED.

However, given the complexity of ocular surface disease, we still have much to learn. This issue of MillennialEYE touches on some key topics surrounding the ocular surface: new findings from the Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society Dry Eye WorkShop II, insights into a mind-body approach to managing DED, pearls for treating patients with DED and normal tear osmolarity, an overview of the role of nutrition and nutraceuticals, and a look at the importance of optimizing the ocular surface before surgery.

Great strides have been made in our understanding, diagnosis, and management of ocular surface disease, and I look forward to what the future brings.
