Around the World: Detlef Holland, MD

Practice Location:

Kiel, Germany

Type of practice and patient population:

I am a cataract and refractive surgeon at Augenklinik Bellevue, a self-owned practice with five partners and five residents. We cooperate with several other practices around the city (www.nordblick.de). At Augenklinik Bellevue, we see around 24,000 patients per year and perform around 14,000 operations per year, about 6,000 of which are cataract surgeries.

Best part about living in Kiel:

The best part of living in Kiel is its location. The city is located on the southwestern shore of the Baltic Sea. It takes only 15 minutes to reach the German countryside, which is lovely, especially in spring and summer. If you want to experience the advantages of a big city, Hamburg is only 50 minutes away.

Favorite way to spend a day off:

It is best to spend a day on the water, sailing, windsurfing, or stand-up paddling.
