To Apply | Women in Ophthalmology’s Mentorship Program

Women in Ophthalmology (WIO) has opened its mentorship program, which will kick off at the organization’s Summer Symposium (August 25–28 in Monterey, California). According to WIO, mentor and mentees will learn about others in the program by viewing their profiles and find mentors or mentees that match their interests. Options for mentorship through the WIO program range from one-on-one pairings, to mentorship families, to task-based mentorship (such as mentoring someone on how to chair a meeting or write a paper). WIO asks that all interested mentors apply by
August 1.

Researchers from the National Eye Institute have identified a novel macular dystrophy, which is yet to be named. Macular dystrophies are disorders that typically cause central visual loss due to mutations in several genes, including ABCA4, BEST1, PRPH2, and TIMP3. On a recent episode of EyewireTV, one of the researchers involved in the project, Rob Hufnagel, MD, PhD, commented on this work and the significance of the findings.
