As surgeons, much of our focus lies in perfecting our surgical skillsets and ensuring that we deliver superior clinical outcomes, as we were trained to do. However, there is one side of ophthalmic practice that is left off our med school curriculum: the business plan. This facet of practice can easily fall by the wayside in the face of larger, more significant demands; however, as a key influence on the patient experience and on our ability to successfully do our job, investing time and energy in this area is a must.

This issue of MillennialEYE aims to provide a variety of practical advice for running a high-quality medical practice and business. We will discuss pearls for maximizing efficiency in the operating room, top business models in ophthalmology, online marketing and reviews, and patient retention. We hope this insight will serve to enhance the nonmedical side of your practice, so that the medical side—our true passion and focus—can thrive.
