Changing Minds, Changing Times

gary wörtz md

In a field that evolves as rapidly as ophthalmology, the importance of adapting to change cannot be overstated. Of course, as physicians, we all hold our beliefs, our values, and our preferences. But we must simultaneously remain open to new ideas, new perspectives, new tools, and new approaches. As playwright George Bernard Shaw said, “Those who cannot change their mind cannot change anything.”

In this issue of MillennialEYE, contributors take sides for the sake of presenting dueling viable takes on hot topics in ophthalmology. As evidenced by these accounts, it is ultimately up to each physician to determine what is best for him- or herself and for his or her patients. However, we owe it to our patients and our field to continue to ask questions, to consider the alternatives, and to assess and reassess our practices over time. Progress requires it.
