During ME Live 2014 in Austin, I spoke about the importance of engaging in the ophthalmology community. Our specialty, more than most others, has an openness, freedom of idea exchange, and collegiality that creates a great social environment.

We had a chance to speak recently with one of the ophthalmologists that embodies this spirit as much or more than anyone. Bill Trattler, MD, and I have been colleagues for many years, but more importantly, we have been good friends as well. We have worked together on studies, meeting programs, and a host of other things. Bill understands well the power of a wide-ranging network and is quick to introduce individuals to new contacts and help establish new connections. In the video clip that serves as this month edition of The Mentors column, he gives a nice summary of how young ophthalmologists can engage in the community and why it is so important to do so.
